Sow True Seed: Growing a Mission-Driven Seed Company Without Bending the Brand
Independent seed company in Asheville, NC, selling open-pollinated, heirloom and organic seeds.
The challenge
Sow True Seed sells open-pollinated, heirloom and organic seeds from Asheville, NC. It competes with seed giants and marketplaces on its mission rather than on price.
That mission sets the rules. As Hannah Gibbons put it: “Obviously we’re seeking brand growth and increased revenue, but only through the avenues that feel true to us. So that’s a pretty hard line.”
The team also wanted growth that paid for itself. Early in 2025, Elsa Stanton raised a concern that the marketing budget was growing faster than sales. Behind the scenes, the store’s technical foundation had become fragile. Retired product pages were sending shoppers to dead ends, and thousands of redirects pointed at the homepage instead of a real product.
The approach
A brand refresh that starts with the people who already love you. For the 2025 brand and website relaunch, we built a 60-day rollout aimed at existing customers first. It used owned channels, earned media, local advertising and retargeting so loyal buyers met the new identity before the wider market did. We also worked with the site build partner on site structure and redirects to protect search visibility through the launch.
Human-made over templated. When we tested video approaches, the team said they preferred human-created video over AI-generated templates. We followed that call: seed-starting reels, product-page video and gardener-made content in place of stock automation.
Research that earns attention. We designed and ran “The 2026 Sow True Seed Garlic Gardening Survey,” with 516 respondents, and published it as a study on the Sow True site. The press release and a seven-chart pack were then pitched to garden writers, extension agents, podcasts and trade outlets.
Fixing the plumbing. We audited every duplicate and retired product URL in the Shopify store. Across 9,635 existing redirects, 8,147 pointed at the homepage. We rebuilt them as a cleaner table of about 8,900, sending visitors to real product equivalents. We also updated the store theme so product cards link straight to product pages and breadcrumbs show the most specific real category. That change was tested on a copy of the theme first, then checked on the live site.
Protecting the brand. When a copycat site imitating Sow True Seed appeared, we filed the complaint that led its host to disable access.
The results
- The research is opening doors with garden media. An NC State Extension horticulture agent invited Sow True to record an episode of his radio program and offered to update his garlic article with the study. A garden newsletter and podcast host invited Hannah to talk about seed garlic. A regional columnist confirmed Sow True will appear in two February 2027 columns, including as a “Website of the Month.”
- The store’s dead ends are being cleared. Shopify confirmed thousands of redirect imports and updates, and the live theme now sends product links and breadcrumbs to real, specific pages.
- The brand is protected. The host of the copycat domain disabled access after the complaint.
